Carcavelos and Lisbon: Between Saudade and the Sea

Lisbon, a cosmopolitan city full of charm, evokes the Portuguese word saudade, perhaps inspired by its traditional neighbourhoods or its iconic trams.

Carcavelos, one of the gems of the Costa do Sol —the so‑called Portuguese Riviera— enjoys a privileged location between Lisbon and elegant Cascais, known for its manor houses and exclusive atmosphere.

Carcavelos Beach, watched over by the Forte de São Julião da Barra, offers a wide stretch of sand ideal for outdoor activities. In summer it hosts surf, windsurf, paddle, volleyball and beach soccer; in winter, surfers come here in search of the best waves.

The region invites you to walk or cycle along the seaside to Cascais or Guincho, visit palaces and the unique landscape of Sintra, explore Cabo da Roca, or enjoy experiences such as sailing, helicopter flights or adventure activities.

Public Bicycles in Carcavelos

Public Bicycles in Carcavelos

Carcavelos has a public bicycle system known as “Bicas”, distributed across several points in the town. They can be rented next to the Cascais train station and at the tourist information office.

These bicycles allow you to explore the municipal cycling network, such as the Cascais–Guincho route (9 km) or the Guincho–Areia section (1 km). A practical detail: you do not need to return the bicycle to the same place where you picked it up.
